Healthy Aging is about more than avoiding illness and injury. It’s about living well and enjoying life during our years as an older adult. Yes, our minds and bodies change as we age. But you can take a proactive approach to aging by adopting healthy habits and behaviors, managing any existing health conditions you may have, and staying connected to family, friends, and people in your community.
Here are some simple tips that will help you stay active and independent as you age:
- Adopt a healthy eating plan that includes nutritious foods and plenty of liquids including water and juices that do not have sugar added.
- Move more and sit less. Even moderate physical activity done most days of the week can help you prevent, delay, and manage chronic diseases. It also helps improve balance and stamina, while supporting brain health and reducing the risk of falling.
- Get regular health check-ups and health screenings.
- Support the health of your brain. Engage in activities that are socially and intellectually stimulating. Also be sure to get enough sleep, avoid using tobacco products, and reduce or eliminate your alcohol consumption.
